Beyond Baby Carriers
Okay, there's a lot of cool stuff out there for hip moms and dads. Here's my list of "must-have" products.

A Simple Anatomy Lesson in Pouches, Ring Slings
and Short Wraps (or Rebozos):

Pouches (also called tube slings)

Components: A length of fabric that has been sewn together,
forming a large tube that is worn like a sash across one shoulder.

inside baby pouch

Use: The tube is folded in half lengthwise, placed over the wearer’s
dominant shoulder, and the baby can lie or sit inside the pocket
formed by the lengthwise fold.

Nonadjustable fleece pouch

Variations: Pouches are made from woven, stretch, or polarfleece
material. Most pouches are nonadjustable, which means they have
to be custom made to fit one person/size. There are some
adjustable pouches available now, too.

Ring Slings

Components: A length of fabric that has two large rings sewn
on one end, also worn like a sash on one shoulder, like the pouch.
The difference is a ring sling is always adjustable.

threaded ring sling with pleats

Use: The opposite end (called the tail) is threaded through
the two rings (like a D-ring style belt). Pulling on one side
of the tail tightens the inner or outer rail for a custom fit,
once the baby is placed inside.

snuggle carry with a ring sling

Variations: There are many different shoulder styles available
that provide more or less coverage on the weight-bearing shoulder.
Ring slings are generally made from woven fabric, although knit
fabric can be used if you wear two ring slings -- one on each shoulder.
A careful balance must be struck between ring size and fabric
density to ensure ease of adjustment without the material slipping
through the rings when baby is inside.

Short Wraps (also called Rebozos)

short wrap or rebozo

Components: A long piece of woven fabric, usually 3 yards by 30 inches.

short wrap with knot in the back

Use: The fabric is folded in half lengthwise and wrapped around
the wearer’s body and the two ends are tied in a knot so it can
generally be used like a ring sling or a pouch.

cradle carry with short wrap

Variations: A short wrap can be made from almost anything --
even an old sheet! Rebozos are beautiful Mexican shawls that
are lightweight and often decorated with fringe at both ends.
These are equally fashionable with or without a baby inside!
